Frank 5inatra: Swing and Dance with Frank Sinatra. Capitot/lmpex Records (2 LPs).

Impex released 33rym and SACD ver sions of this 1950 Columbia Sinatra al bum four years ago, with sonics ftesher than ever. But I was floored b1. this remas tered 45rpm 1-step release: Sinatra’s voice has even more reach-out-and-touch-it immediacyl r,he sonic picrure rs more open, with greatet warmth, tfansparencv, dynamic range, and sheer vividness. On some recordings from that period, vocal problems mandated Sinatra ovetdub his voice, and the band sounded “back there” as a result. Here, though, the instrumental solos exhibit a nearly demonstration-cal iber ptesence. There are several new ot alternate tacks, including a previously urueleased 1 S-minute open-mic rehearsal of “It All Depends on You” that affords a valuable peek into how Sinatra and colleagues worked together. This album marks an important watershed in Sinatra’s career. The unifi.rrg theme of “swing and dance” songs widr full-bore iazz arrange ments both adumbrated his great “Con cept Albums” of the imminent Capitol years and announced his intendon to con quer the wodd of lazz as completely as he had that of the ballad. $flith gatefold in handsome slipcase, exemplary documen tation, and blissfuily quiet RTI pressings, the whole package q,pifies the high tech nical excellence, peedess class, and stylish graphics of Impex releases. -Paul Seydor
